Stay Legal – Stay Alive and Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Northern Ireland’s largest independent tyre retailers Modern Tyre Service who have 26 outlets province wide announced today at a press launch at Belfast Castle their support for the first nationwide tyre safety month.

The importance of keeping tyres at the correct pressure and ensuring that they are legal and in good condition, are at the heart of a nationwide tyre safety campaign which was launched by TyreSafe on the 1st of October.  Tyresafe are the tyre industry’s leading safety organisation, and are supported by Modern Tyre Service in

Low tyre pressures can cost the driver more money in fuel as well as pump more CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and severely under inflated tyres are a safety risk. According to the government, driving with a green conscience could stop 5.5 million tones of carbon dioxide (CO2) being released and save drivers £2 billion a year in fuel bills if their tyres are properly inflated.

In support of the campaign Modern Tyre Service is offering motorists throughout a tyre safety and pressure check completely free of charge at any of their depots from Monday 15th of October to Friday 26th October. In addition to this they will be carrying out supermarket checks. They will be in the Quays Shopping centre in Newry on Monday 22nd, Sprucefield Shopping Centre in Lisburn on Wednesday 24th and at the new ASDA store in Enniskillen on Friday the 26th.

As well as having the piece of mind of getting a free tyre inspection, Modern Tyre Service will donate £1.00 for every tyre check carried out to Cancer Research as October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month. That’s not all participants will be entered into a  super free prize draw with the opportunity to win some fabulous Bridgestone Merchandise.

Commenting at the launch today Stephen Shaw, Group Sales and Marketing Manager for Modern Tyre Service said “Our campaign has a dual effect firstly by offering motorists a free tyre safety, we want to help to educate them on issues relating to tyre safety with the aim of making  our roads a safer place. Secondly we also want to help raise money for charity and as its Breast Cancer awareness month we decided that we would donate £1.00 for each tyre check carried out”.

The TyreSafe tyre safety campaign also sets out to reinforce how important tyres are in terms of road safety. In the , 12% of cars and vans have at least one defective tyre and a further 12% have at least one badly worn tyre worn below 2mm. Recent government figures show that under-inflated or defective tyres are responsible for more than a third of all road crashes resulting in injury.

Andy Crawford Operations Manager with the Driver and Vehicle Agency – Testing stated at the launch “The key aim of  Driver and Vehicle Agency -  Testing, is to promote and improve road safety.  We carry out over 750,000 roadworthiness checks a year on cars and motorcycles, light goods vehicles, trailers, large passenger carrying vehicles and heavy goods vehicles.  We fully support any initiative which promotes road safety and helps to reduce the number of accidents on our roads each year”.
